Purple carpet is a term denoting the respect and ceremony given to significant individuals. It is a reference to the fact that dignitaries literally walk on a crimson carpet. Ambassadors, chiefs of state, members of the royal family, and celebrities can all be considered dignitaries. While the red carpet is utilised for effect on other, less significant events, it is also employed on major, formal occasions. The Agamemnon play by Aeschylus, which dates back to Ancient Greece, is when the red carpet first appeared.
